Whereas on October 26, 27 and 28 students at the University of Regina voted on whether or not they wanted to remain members of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS); and Whereas URSU members attending First Nations University voted in the CFS referendum but their ballots were separated and have not been counted. Whereas the University of Regina Students’ Union (URSU) has publically stated that URSU members attending First Nations University were not eligible voters in the CFS referendum and that the votes that they cast in the referendum should not count; and Whereas URSU is wasting tens of thousands of dollars of students money to sue the CFS to prevent URSU members attending First Nations University from having their votes counted; and Whereas the CFS Bylaws, defines a referendum as a general vote of the members of a local student association; and Whereas First Nations University students pay full URSU fees and are therefore considered full members of the URSU; and Whereas the URSU’s constitution states that all members in good standing as members of the Students’ Union are entitled to vote or cast a ballot in any or all referenda, elections, or general meetings of the Students’ Union. Whereas the 2006 Partnership Agreement between the URSU and the First Nations University Students’ Association (FNUNIV-SA) states that nothing in this Agreement jeopardizes or precludes individual members of the FNUNIV-SA from remaining and continuing to be members of the URSU and enjoy the benefits of membership in that organization; and Whereas the CFS recognizes that URSU members attending First Nations University are full voting members and should have their voices heard; therefore We the undersigned call on the University of Regina Students Union to recognize that URSU members attending the First Nations University of Canada have the right to vote in all general elections and referendums and their ballots be counted for the October 2010 referendum on continued membership in the CFS.
