First: DONT FALL IN LOVE WITH A CAR ON THE LOT! It’s an easy job for a salesman to reel in a fish (that’s what they call you) that has it’s mouth wide open, it’s tongue hanging out, and who is drooling.
Second: PAY ATTENTION and BE AWARE that somewhere during the buying process, the sleezy manipulators are going to add fees to the price you have agreed to pay for the automobile.
Third: KNOW that NO ONE has to pay those fees or documentation fees. They may even tell you that they are required by law!!
Forth: Know that there are thousands of unsold cars sitting around, many are identical to the one you are trying to deal on. They may not be in your town or even in your state. Look online, make calls, ask about added fees, check customers’ feedback on the seller, and if possible, try to get a feel for the integrity of the seller.
Fifth: If you are encouraged by what you have learned, and it is practical, take a road trip or fly to checkout your potential new car. Legitimate dealers are happy to give you an honest appraisal of your trade, if you have one. If you are objective in describing it, they will honor their offer. You have to determine that what they are asking for their car is realistic, the ACV (Actual Cash Value). Remember, it doesn’t matter what you are “given” for your trade. The only figure that matters is how much difference you will pay them.
Finally: Legislation can’t fix greed. The only way to eliminate the dealers’ added fees, is NOT TO PAY THEM! Good luck.

You can’t legislate morality, ethics, greed, corruption, deception, truth, trust, sleezy salesmenship and sleezier dealerships. However, as with many other issues, education, knowledge and competition are strong forces governing individual choices. I first experienced this illicit practice in FL, and it has spread. Some dealers scam their customers in northern states also. Some dealers squeeze insane “documentation fees” from their customers. I believe dealer and documention fees are not mentioned to the customer until the sleezeball vendors, salesmen, or F & I rip-off artists are hastily having customers sign a bunch of papers including financing forms. Those unethical fees are tossed in there inconspicuously and nonchalantly. A lot of people are not even aware that they are being fleeced, partly because of the polished tactics of the bait-and-add-on artists and because they are so eager to drive their new car home. When shopping for an automobile, I make it clear to the vendor, that I will not pay any money in excess of the agreed-upon prices plus tax, title, and registration. I will not pay a fee for the privilege of giving them my money.

Dealer fees are deceptive, unethical, and immoral. They are classic examples of bait and switch. Any fees added to the agreed-upon price of a product, besides sales tax, state title and transfer fees are dishonest.

If dealers in CA can get by on $65-$80, why can't FL dealers do the same?

If you want to know the exact price or difference you're paying for a car just divide the sales tax by 6 then multiply it by 100. Tax cannot be charged on government or official fees just services and merchandise.

It's shocking to see that CA. of all states.... have such a modest fee. These ridiculous "fees/charges" are awful especially when the dealer has a choice regarding the amount/charging or NOT charging of them. #capdealerfees #knowyourdealerpeeps do the extra research. Nothing good comes from greed.

Florida legislators need to put an end to this scam fee being allowed by dealers or they must put a cap on it. What many don’t know is that ALL dealers are paid a dealer holdback that is paid to the dealership for each vehicle they sell regardless of what price they sell the vehicle. It is non-negotiable in the price negotiation but it is there. Dealers have to make profit to stay in business and that’s understandable but this dealer fee is a scam. There is the vehicle msrp, taxes, delivery charge, paperwork fees, but the dealer fee must end. The msrp is negotiable, taxes are based on final sales price, delivery charge is non-negotiable, paperwork fees vary and could be negotiable, but again the dealer fee must end!

Allowing Dealer fees as well as other means of padding dealer profit should be illegal. It IS unethical. The price posted should be the selling price. Financing should only matter after the price of the vehicle is negotitated.
