As the Florida Memorial University Student Government Association (SGA) President, I, Siyaka Yakubu, am representing the Student Body to voice concerns and issues that we have experienced. These issues and concerns have gone unaddressed and have caused challenges in our academic success and collegiate experience. I was afforded a platform to address the Student Body on January 18, 2017 at the Florida Memorial University National Pan-Hellenic Council Meeting. During this meeting, the concerns of the student body were voiced by the NPHC affiliate chapter leaders, SGA leaders, Royal Court, Class Officers and various other student organization leaders. The following are concerns that require immediate attention by the University President, University Executive Cabinet and Board of Trustees:

  • The Student Body request immediate reinstatement of the co-ed visitation policy that implemented Spring 2017.
  • The Student Body request the immediate implementation of Campus Labs to allow electronic facility request.
  • The Student Body request immediate repair to the WIFI network connectivity throughout the campus.
  • The Student Body request access to facilities such as the Smith Conference Center to host student events.
  • The Student Body request menu considerations in the cafeteria for those are vegan, vegetarian, and have religious dietary restrictions.
  • The Student Body request extended hours for the library, computer labs in the resident halls and in the Lehman Building.
  • The Student Body request a reduction in tuition in the amount of $4,000 yearly to remain competitive with competing institutions and assist our international students with retention.
  • The Student Body request for an immediate explanation of why cars were towed during the Christmas holiday with no notice given to students.
  • The Student Body request for an explanation of what the general fees cover and are they charged by the fiscal year or semester.
  • The Student Body request for system to be implemented to support students career development in the absence of the Career Development Center.
  • The Student Body is requesting that the Late Registration fee of $250 be waived for international students that were waiting on their government scholarship award letter.
  • The Student Body request that the Student Handbook be updated to reflect the new leadership, the services provided to the students, and the new policy changes.
  • The Student Body request a correspondence from the University in regards to the rumor of school closure to calm the student body and ensure they remain students after this semester.
  • The Student Body request transparency and increased communication from the University leadership.
  • The Student Body request funding be provided to the School of Business for tutors.
  • The Student Body request that the menu for the weekend be examined and the food be monitor due to spoiled food and repeat menu items being provided to students over the weekend.
  • The Student Body request for report of donated funds collected during donation day.
  • The Student Body request for an itemized breakdown of the $300 graduation fee.
  • The Student Body request for a reduction in security fees when hosting events on campus.
  • The Student Body request for extended hours of access to the Bloomberg terminals to complete assignments on time.
  • The Student Body request for an explanation on why refund checks take 6-8 weeks after school has started.
  • The Student Body request that University offered scholarships reflect that they are need based when recruiting so that students are not expecting the funds if they awarded outside scholarships.
  • The Student Body request an explanation on why the Student ID cards were confiscated previous to clearing for the semester with no reported chain of custody. These cards have a dual use and can perform as a debit card. With no chain of custody, the debit card feature could have suffered possible compromise.
  • The Student Body request the room deposit refund procedure be communicated to the student body.
  • The Student Body request that the University President accept the invitation of the SGA President to address the Student Body in a Student Body meeting.
