FLOODING CASTLE-LEA

There’s a monastery in Cumbria that has been protected from flooding for centuries by earth bunds constructed by monks centuries ago to prevent the river flooding onto their land. I wrote to Ross Price at MDC last week to propose a similar approach by constructing bunds of 3-4 metres high in the Castle grounds between Castle Lea/ Castle Lodge. This low tech approach could be implemented quickly and relatively low cost. I am waiting for their response

Doesn’t take a lot to put a temporary system in place while they work out a bigger plan on how to solve the recurring problem. They need to pull their finger out and stop avoiding real world problems.

There is definitely a problem. I used to walk the dogs on the field before the houses were built and never saw flooding and the scale it has reached now is disastrous. If something is not done before all the new homes are added to above church road on the field area, the Castle Lea residents won't have homes left!

Awful to see the same people getting flooded time after time

The money spent on the town should have been spent on flood defences

This is a real worry for many families. People who are already stressed enough with everything that is happening - it is about time that something is done. Council need to raise their game and remember that delivering a couple of sandbags per house is totally inadequate. Prevention is required not a pathetic sticking plaster!

Please stop building more houses and pumping water. I don't know who is doing there flood risk assessments.

Please resolve this continuing problem. It has been reported that the castle country park will not dredge the Neddern brook as this will affect wildlife habitation.

I've been flooded twice in 2020 from the Neddern, first in March and Christmas eve. NRW or Monmouthshire CC don't give a damn, members of the Mon CC had only a few sandbags to try to protect a number of houses in Castle Lodge Crescent, I was told its a waste of time having sandbags at my house because water was already inside. My Christmas was finished, thanks for your help MCC.

It's gone on too long. Some rain and homes are at risk. Emergency pump on sea wall permanently would be an idea. And the Neddern exit flap is was too small. Council bang you fist a bit more !

This needs addressing immediately. It’s a recurring issue for the residents every year

The fact that this situation has been allowed to become an annual, yet avoidable occurrence is a disgrace. If the powers that be were simply to ensure the river Neddern was cleared regularly, as they once did and also co-ordinated the work of all relevant agencies, this devastation to local peoples property and months of re-locstion could be averted. The argument that any work on the Neddern would adversely affect the wildlife simply does not compare with the adverse effect on the local population. Time after time it has been proven around the world that nature does 'bounce back' . This argument is just an excuse for reduction in spending on public services and cost cutting exercises. I hope that all people around Caldicot will support this petition to show their support and show the powers that be that there is a strong sense of community in this area.

It’s an absolute disgrace that we have to put up with this each year, when the resolution is so simple. Clearing the Neddern and ensuring all sluice gates are working efficiently will stop this happening.
