Enough with the hotels, especially downtown. While I understand that tourism money helps to bring new businesses, I agree that Asheville needs to focus less on adding hotel rooms and more on affordable housing and paying living wages to the people who make this area their home.

No more flipping hotels. For hire signs are everywhere! Where do you propose to get employees for it when all of the people who will work there are leaving because they can't afford to live here!

Turning this building is a bad idea. The local businesses currently in that building will be run out of town. The current occupants help keep the other local downtown businesses and restaurants flourishing which is what makes Asheville different than other touris destination cities. Furthermore, losing the parking to this hotel or any other will keep me from doing any eating or shopping downtown. Please consider the impact this decision will make on the citizens of Asheville and vote against the hotel.

All the hotels and tourists are destroying the character of downtown Asheville. Once all the locals are gone, downtown will be no different than any other tourist trap.

This gorgeous, historic building is absolutely intrinsic to the personality and charm of Asheville. And the dozens and dozens of small businesses it houses are important to our local economy — they would no doubt struggle to find other comparable spaces. Plus, losing them to other parts of town would make downtown less vibrant.

No problem with growth, but no more at the expense of the people that live and work here. Furthermore, all hotels should be required to provide 150% of their occupancy in parking and have a shuttle for guests to encourage them leaving heir cars off the streets of downtown.
