We Auburn University alumni and friends have lost confidence in Jay Jacobs as Auburn University Athletic Director. We believe that his statements regarding the resignation of Coach Tommy Tuberville were, in fact, an attempt to deceive. We believe Tuberville "resigned" only in the narrowest sense--either being pressured or given less support than he needed. Moreover, Jay Jacobs' hiring of a coach with a losing record showed a lack of wisdom and effectiveness. The controversy surrounding the choice of the new coach has also caused a great deal of embarrassment to our university. Therefore we respectfully request President Jay Gogue to terminate the employment of Jay Jacobs as Athletic Director. We will support the new coach with all the loyalty and passion which comes from being a part of the Auburn family. We will give that support only after Jay Jacobs, and hopefully other elements which have played political and power games with Auburn athletics, have been fired or disassociated from the program. We do not believe that racism played any part in the exclusion of other coaches from consideration, but believe this action is necessary for the Auburn University supporters, students, and alumni to heal and move forward.
