"I support advocacy for literacy through life-long reading and writing." Creative writing skills developed and nurtured within viable Creative Writing classes in high school curriculum fosters critical thinking skills, interpersonal communication skills, self-esteem, and promotes life-long thirst for knowledge and constructive expression in community, the employment arena, and civil public debate. I am a proponent of securing a lasting endorsement of Creative Writing in the curriculum for the Utah high school classroom. Alice M. Batzel Published Playwright, Journalist, Freelance Writer

As a sophomore in high school, I definitely feel the lack of creativity in my day. In English Writing, I have been taught year and year again how to write persuasively and informationaly, with no creativity to speak of. I know they just want us to be successful, but there is more than one way to be so, like there is more than one way to write.

Creativity, problem solving, point of view, voice, empathy, imagination, narrative structure, nonlinear expression, brain hemisphere integration... These are benefits of creative writing. We need creative writing in Utah schools.

Creative writing needs to stay in the classroom. Creativity is a key element to technical writing. Having spend over 15 years working as a professional writer, I can testify that you need creative writing skills to help you in all areas of your life. For example, one thing you learn as a creative writer is how to see the big picture (the whole story) and be able to know the small elements that help you solve the problem (how to write the story). Please keep creative writing in the classroom.

Creative writing is something I crave as a hobby, and I have desperately wanted to take a course on it in school. I am now a senior in high school and have only taken one. The sad thing is how tremendously lucky I was even for that. This is one of the most worthy causes I have ever joined and I wish you nothing less than total success!

Science and Math will teach us how to and find their answers, but art teaches us to create our own answers.

The public education system has taught us to turn off creativity, to regurgitate knowledge instead of thinking. Having the option to be creative, to voice your thought, can teach us to start thinking, not just becoming a machine that spits out what teachers put in. We need that ability to think, and creative writing is a great way to do it

From personal experience I can tell you that when you receive nothing but essays as assignments instead of being given the chance to improve and show off your talent as a creative writer is hurtful on one's self-esteem. With every essay that is assigned to me, the less time I have for my own creative writing time, and the lower my self-esteem goes.
