Did you know in the state of Pennsylvania if you don\'t have health insurance you cannot be placed on the organ donor list! Welcome to the United States of America, the land of the free and the home of the brave-not the case here. Even if one would obtain the Access card (Pennsylvania\'s insurance for those without insurance)-one still cannot be placed on the list. This deeply sickens me that thousands of working Pennsylvanians are without health insurance and are denied this human right. This is absolutely inhuman, repulsive, and unethical and we need to fight for our rights. My father is a fifty-three year old retired railroad worker who is in need of a heart transplant. Do to medical reasons he retired in 2001 on partial disability, and was recently rewarded full retirement. The catch is the retirement does not begin until October of 2009. After rushing him to Pittsburgh when our hospital could do no more for him, we were hit with the fact this man needed a transplant surgery to sustain life. After we fought for the Access card we were told even with this he could not be placed on the donor list. Why you ask, I will tell you because Pennsylvania does not make money off of a transplant surgery when they pay for it. Once again the state, the government is trying to put a price on life. Unfortunate for them God gives and takes life and there is no price on a life. I am starting this petition so no other human, none of my fellow citizens have to be denied the right to fight for life because of their the lack of insignificant funds. I hope and pray that this is not the case in every state, for if it is I guarantee, I promise, my voice does not stop here. My goal is for no other human to suffer or feel the pain my family has been feeling for the past few weeks for Pennsylvania\'s inconsideration to life. When people willing sign their driver license to be an organ donor they are not told that their organs will go to the richest person with the best insurance. If Pennsylvania refuses to amend this law, one can guarantee I will fight for them to include this when people are being compassionate in willing to save others lives. Yet this is what is happening, placing a price on people\'s lives. We are a democracy, we have a voice, please join me and fight for our rights to live, regardless of how much money is in our bank accounts. Fight for your rights, your fellow Americans rights, and for our future.

The stories shared by others in similar predicaments remind me that this struggle for equitable medical access is far broader than my own family experience. I spend my evenings documenting these accounts to ensure that legislators understand the human cost of current policies. We must continue to shine a light on these barriers until they are dismantled for every person in need.

Reaching this level of engagement confirms that the struggle to reform organ transplant access is a concern shared by many across our state. Seeing this collective momentum grow reinforces my conviction that we must continue to challenge policies that place a financial barrier between citizens and their survival.

Disgusting. People are dying because of paperwork and greed. Shame on PA.

This is completely wrong. Health insurance shouldnt decide who lives and who dies. Prayers for your dad.

How can they sleep at night knowing this is happening to people? Absolutely sickening.
