If you don't know already the facilities for Mechanical, Energy and Material students is very poor for both Bachelors and Masters students. We work in room 301. Have a look at this (Mech facilities) and then have a look at room 247 (Elec facilities). Spot the difference? They all have assigned desks and their own computers. All masters students pay the same fees so we should get at least similar facilities regardless of the funding obtained by the school.

What we are looking for that we don't, and should, have are:

1. Working computers (look in room 301 to see what we 'run' simulations on)

2. An assigned desk space

3. Not be be kicked out of the room while labs are on

These are all very reasonable!

This petition is to show the heads of school and college that we are serious about fixing this ongoing problem and and that these poor facilities for study and project work are unacceptable.

Updates

December 8, 2014

The disparity between our current workspace and the facilities provided to other departments remains a primary concern. I am currently preparing a formal document that highlights these inequalities to present to the faculty administration. Your continued patience is appreciated while I work to ensure our requirements are addressed with the proper level of seriousness.

The momentum behind this petition confirms that the current state of our study facilities is a shared frustration across our departments. This level of engagement demonstrates to the administration that we are united in our demand for equitable resources and dedicated workspace.

its honestly embarrassing when you walk past the elec labs compared to what we have. paying international fees for computers that crash every 5 mins is a joke.

Materials science and Energy systems master students are being put in the same position and it's very demotivating. After this treatment I will actively recommend that students wishing to study any of these types of engineering to look elsewhere for their degrees!

They've known about this issue for at least 8 weeks at this stage and NOTHING has been done. 301 isn't even an a Final year room, it's just where a lot of us have taken tried to stay because there's nowhere else. We should clear up this issue Gilchrist said in that the lack of money for these things is due to reduction in the Governments contribution to fees. This is completely invalid as if this is true then it's true for the other disciplines yet they still have facilities and we don't. What he's said is that mech have no money. When challenged on how other disciplines like electronic have money for these things he's skirted away saying they get a lot of sponsorship from ERC etc. The question is now WHAT has he and the ME Mech administrative team done to acquire such funding for Mech. We're paying them over 8 grand for the masters. That all goes towards paying our fees which pay the lecturers (i.e. THEM) and the "administrative staff". There's a good few companies out there sure we all got placements somewhere and it's THEIR job to go to these and get them to throw us a few G's which would make all the difference and a lot of companies would do this just to be seen as aiding 3rd level education. Sure didn't McHale even sponsor Sean Hynes to drive a car...nuff said
