FIFA Must Replace South African Referees for Nigeria vs Gabon World Cup Playoff Match
We, concerned Nigerian football fans and global supporters of fair play, are calling on FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to urgently review and change the recent appointment of South African match officials for Nigeria’s crucial World Cup playoff match against Gabon, scheduled for November 13 in Morocco.
This decision has sparked deep concern and outrage among fans across Africa — and for good reason.
Over the past years, Nigeria and South Africa have shared a tense football and political rivalry that has frequently spilled over into heated confrontations on and off the pitch. From disputes in AFCON tournaments to controversial officiating in key qualifiers, this rivalry has often been marked by bias claims, inflammatory statements, and mutual suspicion.
Recently, South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, openly expressed resentment toward Nigeria’s football success and even publicly declared that he “does not want Nigeria to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.” Such remarks, coming from a high-ranking government official, clearly show that emotions around Nigeria’s progress in football are far from neutral in South Africa.
Given this historical tension and visible animosity, appointing South African referees to officiate a match that could determine Nigeria’s World Cup fate creates a serious conflict of interest and undermines the principles of neutrality, fairness, and integrity that FIFA and CAF stand for.
We, therefore, respectfully demand that FIFA and CAF:
Immediately withdraw the South African refereeing team assigned to the Nigeria vs. Gabon playoff match.
Appoint neutral referees from countries with no political or football tension with Nigeria or South Africa.
Ensure transparency and fairness in the officiating selection process for all African playoff matches moving forward.
This is not a call for hostility — it is a call for fairness. Football should unite, not divide.
Every nation deserves an equal chance on the field without fear of political or national bias influencing the outcome.
We love African football. We believe in fair competition.
Let’s protect the spirit of the game.
