I have spent the last 12 years working to support a non-profit, volunteer-led youth soccer organization. Pier 40 has been critical to our existence, but local youth sports organizations’ field spaces are bursting at the seams. It’s crucial to the health of lower Manhattan youth (and also the outer borough youth we serve) that more outdoor field space is developed. Why encourage the development of densely-packed luxury residential living when these families will be left without any open space for their children?

Public spaces that promote wellness are vital for a healthy and economically prosperous community. Venues that can host sporting events generate and promote healthy entertainment and economic opportunities. Please entrust our youth with this lesson by providing them the space to love sports.

I coached 25 different ball teams for the Greenwich Village Little League. I also coached 7-8 soccer teams for DUSC, all utilizing the fields at Pier 40...This was as important to the youth as school, maybe more important to some. We need more fields to accommodate our community's youth.

So imporant for the children, youth and families in the surrounding areas! Worth every penny short- and long-term. This is what community building and resilience is all about!

Our community has long been desperate for outdoor space dedicated to ball fields and youth sports development. A covered space near 14th street is a home run decision for generations to come and great way for the residents of our area to connect. I am the executive director of a 150 year old non-profit on west 14th street, if the community needs a place to organize in support of this effort, please reach out.

I’m a product of GVLL and a division 1 college baseball player. Without the fields I used growing up like pier 40, I would not have been able to achieve this. It all starts with kids having a place to play, and more fields will mean more successful athletes.

The Pier 40 fields are the only thing that give my downtown boys anything resembling the experience of the entire rest of American boys - the ability to run free on a playing field playing team sports with friends. Please PLEASE do everything in your power to expand fields downtown for the sake of us city families.
