Fields at Gansevoort Peninsula

I’m 16 and have played at DUSC for 13 years and the next generations need more and better fields.

I strongly support this petition.

I grew up playing in DUSC and it was a crucial part of a happy and healthy childhood growing up in NYC.

I don’t know which community board I am in but live in lower Manhattan.

I run Jewish community center downtown and many of our members have children who are in need of more sports fields. This is very important to our community's broadly shared sense of well-being.

This is very important for the community especially the neighborhood children.

The city has a paucity of sports fields! In particular, it lacks full-sized fields! Small pitches and indoor gyms don't cut it... The pier affords one of the few large spaces that can accommodate full-sized fields. We hope you agree that open space is important for children who live all over the city, benefitting children and parents who struggle to find safe, conveniently located sports fields. The city is lucky to have excellent leagues (our two boys participate in DUSC and DSL), but these clubs max out quickly, leaving many kids without sports teams or healthy, affordable extracurricular options. For example, DSL spots fill up in a week, with long waitlists. For DUSC Academy, hundreds of kids try out for limited spots at every age level -- the club can't add more teams because they lack access to field space. This leaves scores of children unable to find good competitive teams to join. Already, NYC schoolchildren suffer insufficient recesses and playground space, so I don't have to say how important it is for all children to be able to join sports clubs with field space that's accessible by public transit. Teams that require families to travel to Randall's island or NJ automatically exclude families that don't have cars. We live on the Lower East Side, our kids go to school in Tribeca and West Village, and we've gotten hundreds of hours of pleasure from Hudson River Park, which has been beautifully designed and provides so many amenities to the public. We hope that it will continue to provide relief for the city and recognize the desperate need for more sports fields, for children' and adult sports leagues alike. Many thanks!

The City offers multiple tax abatements, favorable rezoning and other tax incentives to wealthy developers and huge companies. Yet, the City gets very little back by way of more public playing fields, more schools, more public transportation access or any of the other essetial services needed to support all the additional flow of people to/from mega commercial projects, supertall shadow-casting buildings, and all the polluting and intrusive consrtruction processes to support it all. Get something back for all this. As green spaces have grown around the City - starting with Bloomberg’s commitment to make NYC more green - the quality of life has steadily gone up, while crime has continued to drop. There are endless places along the rivers to build piers for sportsfields. There’s no excuse for pushing these kids an hour’s commute away just to exercise and play sports.

More and more families are deciding to stay in Manhattan, and our children need this space.

This is a great idea, and something that is desperately needed.

The children need more play space

We are anchoring the downtown neighborhood with residencial apartments. Families are moving in and need this space for our children.

We need more open space for kids to play. Particularly in winter months. Soccer programs are over capacity, and this field could be multi-use.

I have two children who are avid athletes. They are growing and need more facilities and programs downtown.

The children of downtown Manhattan desperately need more field space.

City needs more open space for kids to play outside, fields to learn the value of team sports
