Fencing off Joseph Avenue Park

Grassy Park has experienced a rise in crime rates over the past few years, with residents expressing growing concerns about safety. Petty crimes, drug-related activities, and occasional violent incidents are regularly reported to the local SAPS station.
We, the residents of Joseph Avenue and the surrounding neighbourhood in Grassy Park, in Ward 65, respectfully submit this petition to request the installation of fencing at the said park closest to the Joseph Avenue side. This petition arises from numerous community engagements highlighting the urgent need to address safety and cleanliness concerns within our park. We believe that fencing the park will significantly enhance the quality of life for all residents, particularly children and families who use this public space
Grassy Park, like many urban areas, faces challenges related to crime and safety. The open accessibility of the park has unfortunately led to an increase in undesirable activities, including loitering, substance abuse, and occasional incidents of vandalism. These activities not only compromise the safety of park users but also deter families from using the park, which negatively impacts community cohesion. Homes are constantly broken into and resident belongings are regularly stolen due to easy escape routes and poor lighting over the open field and park.
Crime Prevention:
Fencing the park will act as a deterrent to criminal activities by limiting easy access for individuals who engage in illegal activities. A controlled entry point via a single gate installation will enable better monitoring and management of the space.
Child Safety:
The park is a popular spot for children to play. A fenced area will provide parents with peace of mind, knowing that their children can enjoy the park in a secure environment. It will also prevent children from wandering off into potentially dangerous areas, such as nearby roads.
Litter Control:
Restricted access will reduce the likelihood of littering and illegal dumping, ensuring that the park remains a clean and welcoming space for all residents.
Protection of park amenities
Fencing will help protect park amenities such as benches, playground equipment, and green spaces from vandalism and misuse. This will prolong the lifespan of these facilities and reduce maintenance costs.
