Professor Nivedita Menon represents the best of India and of Indian democracy. She is committed to her students and has always engaged with each of them with sincerity. It is this conviction of hers that has led her to hone her Hindi speaking skills, her lectures in Hindi have made her intellectual acumen more accessible to the hundreds of young people who enroll in our universities. She is an inspirational teacher with a deep sense of ethics that is mindful of the hierarchies and inequalities of our society. She is of course a brilliant scholar and a very important figure in the women's movement in our part of the world. It is worrying that someone who is such a fine thinker, teacher and scholar and a very diligent member of the higher education system of India should be vilified in this manner.

When enlightened voices start to be throttled, it's time to get seriously worried. When respected academics are targeted, we need to look at the agenda of the targeters. Who are they, who presume to control, and dictate to, the rest of us? I stand with Nivedita Menon, and with all the besieged and beleaguered, indeed harassed, students and professors everywhere, who speak against injustice and for freedom of thought and freedom to ask questions.

Prof Nivedita Menon is an important voice in this plural, multifarious, diverse, political conglomeration that we call the feminist women’s movements. Her engagement with diverse issues like feminist theory, law, sexuality, technology, understanding of the body, queer theory, has helped deepen the understanding in these areas and also find new ways of campaigning on specific issues like the sex determination tests, personal laws, decriminalization of homosexuality, to name just a few. For me she has been one of the well wisher and has understood disability from a feminist vantage point Her impassioned talks have made many me reflect and engage any issue that are critical to the welfare of women Her commitment to academic discourse is unquestionable
In solidarity I stand with Prof Nivedita Menon
