\"Shannon\'s Law\" CDL suspension for a fatal accident in Illinois
ON APRIL 23RD, 2004 OUR 21 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER SHANNON MAUREEN ORR WAS STOPPED IN TRAFFIC ON HER WAY TO SCHOOL. SHE WAS STOPPED BY A SCHOOL BUS LOADING CHILDREN. THERE WAS A SCHOOL BUS, A CEMENT TRUCK AND HER CAR. WHEN SHE WAS STRUCK FROM BEHIND AND KILLED BY A 40 TON SEMI TRUCK. THE DRIVER WHO FOR SOME REASON DID NOT SEE ANY OF THE THREE VEHICLES IN TIME, THEREFORE STOPPING HIS TRUCK ON TOP AND CRUSHING OUR DAUGHTER BETWEEN THE CEMENT TRUCK AND THE SEMI PINNING HER IN CAR WITH NO CHANCE OF ESCAPE, BURNING HER TO DEATH. THE DRIVER OF THE SEMI TRUCK WAS CHARGED WITH NOTHING MORE THAN A $150.00 FAILURE TO STOP FINE. AS IN THE STATE OF ILLINOIS THERE IS NO LAWS IN PLACE TO PROSECUTE A HOLDER OF A CDL LICENSE ( A PROFESSIONAL DRIVER) IF THERE IS NO DRUG OR ALCOHOL IN THIER SYSTEM. BILL # SB2034 WAS FILED IN THE STATE OF ILLINOIS AT THE 94TH ASSEMBLY BY SENATOR CHRIS LAUZEN ON FEB.25TH, 2005 AND HAD IT\'S FIRST READING THEN. THIS BILL HAS NOW BEEN ASSIGNED TO A RULES COMMITTEE. THE BILL READS: AMMENDS THE ILLINOIS VEHICLE CODE. PROVIDES THAT A DRIVER\'S COMMERCIAL DRIVER\'S LICENSE (CDL) SHALL BE SUSPENDED FOR SIX MONTHS IF HE OR SHE IS INVOLVED AS A DRIVER IN A FATAL ACCIDENT, UNLESS IT IS INDICATED IN A POLICE REPORT OR HELD BY A COURT THAT A PERSON WHO DIED AS A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT CAUSED THE ACCIDENT. PROVIDES THAT THE CDL HOLDER MUST PREFORM 100 HOURS OF MANDATORY COMMUNITY SERVICE BEFORE HIS OR HER CDL IS RESTORED. IT IS NOW UP TO US THE PEOPLE TO DEMAND THAT THIS LAW IS CHANGED. IF YOU AGREE THAT THE FINE IMPOSED DID NOT MATCH THE CRIME, THEN PLEASE ASSIST US IN OUR AIM FOR JUSTICE BY SIGNING THIS PETITION. THIS WILL BE SENT TO THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS OF THE RULES COMMITTEE IN THE HOPE THAT OUR APPEAL WILL BE HEARD. PLEASE HELP US HAVE OUR VOICE HEARD BY SIGNING THIS PETITION. PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG TO AS MANY PEOPLE YOU CAN. THANKS SO MUCH.
