Faith Leaders' Proclamation for Religious Liberty
Religious Leaders Stand for Religious Tolerance
Atrocities committed in the name of religion is the reigning moral affliction of our time. Throughout the Middle East and North Africa, thousands have been slaughtered and their communities decimated by religious zealots devoted to creating a world bereft of religions other than their own. As ancient Middle East Jewish, Christian, and Muslim minority communities fade from history, few religious leaders are speaking out on their behalf.
We believe that silence in the face of evil empowers evil and that God will not hold us guiltless if, as religious leaders, we remain mute in the face of genocide. Further, turning the other cheek to the slaughter of innocents implicates all religions in the devaluation of human life.
As religious leaders we have a moral obligation to reassert God's Holy name on earth, desecrated by unholy people murdering in God's name. Therefore, it is time that clergy stand up for sanctity of life and come to the defense of our brethren, targeted for death simply because of their faith.
As religious leaders we hereby pledge the following:
To speak out on pulpits and in city squares
about the plight of our Middle East brethren under siege for their faith.
To implore our state and national representatives to intervene whether by force, sanction, diplomacy or a combination thereof, on behalf of thousands of religious innocents.
To gather in prayer as religious leaders
against evil committed in the name of religion and to use our collective
power to move the defense of our brethren
to the top of our nation's foreign agenda.
To gather at each of our state capitals on the same designated day, to pray and plead for the safety of our persecuted brethren.
