Fair Grades for Isle of Wight Students
In light of the compelling evidence presented by parents of students enrolled in the Isle of Wight County (IOWC) Public School system, we petition the IOWC School Board and Dr. Michael McPherson, Superintendent, to revise the current grading policy and adopt a 10- point scale, as follows:
90-100 = A = 4.0 points
80-89 = B = 3.0 points
70-79 = C = 2.0 points
60-69 = D = 1.0 points
59-below = F = 0 points
Provide 0.5 point weight for each Honors/GSA class and 1.0 point weight for each AP/GSST class
We believe these changes are necessary for the following reasons:
- Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and other localities have recently adopted the 10-point scale and now have an advantage over our students in competing for college admissions, honors programs, and merit based scholarships.
- At risk students will have an increased chance for success which will encourage them to stay in school and potentially lower drop out rates.
