Fair Academic Assessment for NOSS631 – Operating Systems Module
We, the final-year Diploma in ICT students at Sol Plaatje University, are raising our collective voice regarding the NOSS631: Operating Systems Configuration & Server Management module.
We strongly believe that the current method of assessment – particularly the final exam – is not fair to students due to the following concerns:
- Unfair Content Delivery: The curriculum and core content of the module have not been delivered consistently and effectively, leaving many students disadvantaged.
- Concerns Over Marking: We have experienced marking practices that we feel lack fairness and transparency.
- Misalignment with Learning Outcomes: The exam does not fully reflect the knowledge and skills gained throughout the semester, creating unnecessary barriers to student success.
As final-year students, we want to be evaluated in a way that truly measures our knowledge, growth, and competencies, rather than being unfairly penalized due to systemic challenges.
Therefore, we are petitioning for:
- An alternative form of assessment (such as a project, portfolio, or continuous assessment) instead of the final exam.
- Transparent and fair marking practices that are communicated clearly to students.
- A review of the teaching and learning approach of this module to ensure future students are not disadvantaged.
We are committed to our studies and to upholding the integrity of our qualification. All we ask for is fairness, transparency, and an assessment method that reflects our learning journey.
By signing this petition, we call on the University management and academic leadership to urgently review and act on our concerns.
