A failure of democracy and fundamental freedoms on the Australian left: Open letter

The whole trans thing is SO anti-science!

Australians could never have imagined that the Greens would become the prime movers of a new McCarthyism in Australia. Governments have been complicit through fear with enshrining transgenderism as the mandated religion for this nation. This is an issue beyond left and right but about the foundations of democracy. The witch hunts must be exposed for what they are and the state run inquisitions and purges of gender heretics stopped.

This breaks my heart. It is like McCarthyism, only this time it is against women’s sex based rights. Please help us save Legal Aid for adult human females. How tragic that our only legal support is being taken away. And, the Greens are behaving like the Republicans in America. Trump exploits the ideology that not all, but many, adhere to. American Republican zealots did not care if they destroyed their precious democracy. On Jan 6th 2020 with encouragement from Trump they staged a dictatorial coup and now the same thing is being attempted in the Victorian Greens. Democratic processes protect our human rights. If we lose those, we don’t stand a chance. We are at the whim of whichever dictator takes over. We lose everything. Please pressure the Greens and the NSW Gov to do the right thing and maintain our rights. Do not let this happen to women. Stand up for democracy!

A long overdue clean-up

Tyrannical move by the Greens. This is what the authoritarian left looks like.

as someone who once voted Green I find I can no longer support them given their ridiculous contention that biological males can be women. At BEST they aspire to be but aspiration is just that, an aspiration, not a reality.

And there are many others, like myself, who have chosen over recent years to leave the Greens because of the imposition of ‘no debate’ in the Party, and the vilification of anyone who refused to be silenced on these issues.

A healthy democracy certainly doesn't behave like this!

Sex based protections matter.

What an utter demockery of the democratic process. How on earth can The Greens be taken seriously when they purport to encourage women in politics. Their hate for women will not age well. Signed.

The Greens have subverted democracy and THEIR own democratic processes. I am so disappointed in the Greens - Lifelong Greens voter

For many years I was a loyal Greens supporter and voter. I am dismayed and angry at the vilification that affects so many of us lesbian, feminist and ecological activists. A party that started with democracy at its centre has moved to bullying anyone who dissents or even they think they might dissent. This is a descent into political chaos.

Some few points to the left of Kenghis Khan is not left. Rethink. How many women are politically homeless because the left has abandonned us to keep a few dudes in frocks happy?

I have voted left all my life and this past Federal Election, I had to seriously consider whether my vote was wasted on political parties who appear to hold no regard for my sex based rights.

Disgraceful. Just after the Greens enjoy greater electoral success, they purge the ideas and long-standing members who helped them achieve it. A pox on your house, tyrants.

As a lesbian I find my rights are threatened by The Greens. This must be up for debate.

Debate on Gender Identity politics is not encouraged anywhere, but it is shocking this progressive party has failed to examine this issue openly and honestly.

The debate around gender identity and sex-based rights is a highly fraught one in the Australian polity at this time. It will not be resolved by bullying, lies, and breaches of democratic process, but by respectful and reasoned discussion. That is how democracy is supposed to work. And we live in a democracy, not an authoritarian state in which dissenters are 'purged'. The Greens party has betrayed three of the four pillars that underpin its political philosophy: grassroots participatory democracy; social justice; and peace and nonviolence. It needs to re-embrace them.

This silencing of debate and dismissal of women’s concerns is making the greens look intolerant and authoritarian, surely the opposite of the values people expect. Please reconsider before it is too late.
