Extortion of Students
Petition Against the ₦20,000 Portal Charge
We, the undersigned students, write to formally express our strong objection to the recently introduced ₦20,000 portal charge imposed by the University Management.
This fee comes after students have already paid substantial school fees and other mandatory charges, placing an additional and unfair financial burden on us, especially given the current economic situation in Nigeria.
While the Students’ Union has stated that the charge is meant to support academic and administrative services, there has been no clear breakdown, transparency, or prior consultation with the student body. Imposing such a significant fee without engagement undermines trust and disregards the welfare of students.
We respectfully raise the following concerns:
• Lack of transparency on how the ₦20,000 will be utilized
• No prior notice or student consultation before implementation
• Financial strain on students who have already met existing obligations
• Risk of excluding or disadvantaging students unable to afford the fee
Our Demands:
1. Immediate suspension of the ₦20,000 portal charge
2. A detailed public breakdown of the purpose and allocation of the fee
3. Proper engagement with student representatives before introducing any new charges
4. Consideration of more affordable or alternative funding solutions
Advising compliance without providing transparency does not resolve the concerns of students, it only shifts the burden onto them.
This petition will be submitted to the University Management and relevant administrative authorities for urgent review.
We stand for fairness, transparency, and the protection of students’ interests
