Final supporters
This petition is to increase the lunch/recess time for Michigan Schools. Most of the schools within the county have a 30-40 minutes block of time for recess/lunch. The petition is to propose 30 minutes of lunch time and 30-45 minutes of recess time each school day.
The longer time frame for kids will benefit both the children and faculty in the school. Most parents agree that the current block of time in the school day allotted for lunch/recess is incredible ridiculous. In a 7 hours day of work, an adult is at least guaranteed a 30 minute lunch. Children need at least that much time to eat and socially interact. In some of the schools, children are being rushed by lunch monitors to hurry up and eat and to be quiet so they can finish eating. Then, the children are not suppose to have any behavior issues as a result of being rushed....impossible. Put yourself in the shoes of these kids and imagine your supervisor standing over your shoulder rushing you to hurry up an eat so you can get back to your desk to get back to work. We need to do better for our kids and for future generations.

My son goes to tenniswood elementary and I agree that the lunche periods are much too short. I have participated in the watchdog program and have been at lunch with my son. I barely had enough time to eat. I understand that some of the kids will talk and play and still have to rush but the 15 minutes they get is far too short.
I believe that 15 minutes for lunch is absolutely insane. My son has told me on numerous occasions that by the time he stands in line to get his food and sits down to eat, he doesn't have time to finish eating. This is not acceptable to me. Thank you!
I have seen a direct correlation between not enough recess and behavioral problems. There have been times when I have had to take kids out of the classroom and have them run in order for them to be able to return to class and do class work.
I'm a child care provider. I provider care in summer for children that have graduated from my program. lunch time i encourage them to slow down and enjoy there food. They always say I have to eat fast in school or i don't have enough time to eat. so many issues concerning healthy eating. It's imperative this passes!
When I grew up there was an all school recession the morning around 10:00 am, then there was an all school after lunch recess. This would be great. I think they were 30 min each. Our school is smaller so maybe there could be two lunches k-2 and 3-5. With recess after.
By the time my son grabs his lunch and walks to the cafeteria, he only has 15 minutes to eat. He never finishes his packed lunch because he said he runs out of time!
I believe 15 minutes is not enough. Especially when a certain noonaide holds the kids back and videos records them when they aren't in a perfect line. They dont get enough time as it is. There have been days when my daughter calls me with a stomach ache because shes still hungry. How can kids learn when they are still hungry?

As a teacher, I’ve seen the benefits of children having time to play. It is important for them physically, mentally, socially...we need more time for play for these kids. ❤️
