Expel Natalia Martinez from Georgia State University

As a student and staff member at GSU, I want people on our campus to feel safe. Our school prides itself on diversity and inclusion, so comments and phrasing that marginalize and negatively affect a VERY large sum of our student populus have NO PLACE on this campus. Go up to Athens if you want to be racist. Stay out of Atlanta.

Absolutely unacceptable. This behavior should not be tolerated by the university. GSU prides itself on diversity. Therefore, students of all race, religion, and creed deserve to be in an environment that is celebrating their differences rather than threatening them. Sincerely, Class of 2016.

If everyone could please take a moment to read what I am about to say, I would absolutely appreciate it. Let me just start off by saying that the “N” word is a racist word that has a disgusting history to it. But let me also say, that in many communities with a high concentration of African-Americans, the “N” word has been socially accepted as long as it is not targeted towards everyone. I am from Broward, a county in South Florida that comprises of many African American and Hispanic families. I myself, am a Hispanic. The word spic could be compared to the “N” word due to the troubling history behind it. Both these words are not used to offend, nor insult anyone. They are used because they are heard so frequently from the members of these nationalities. So where am I trying to go with this? Yes, maybe Natalia should not have utilized the “N” word in her caption, but no she should not be expelled if she wasn’t insulting anyone, she was simply just exclaiming her excitement. Recently, Harley Barber (I believe that’s her name) was suspended from her sorority and expelled from the University of Alabama for posting videos exclaiming the hate she feels towards African Americans. She used the “N” word many times, while stating how she hates people of color. How can we compare what Natalia said to what Harley said? How can Natalia suffer the same consequences as someone who intentionally meant to show aggression towards a specific race? I just don’t see it to that extreme. As a minority myself, I really hope those offended can see it from my perspective.

I'm disappointed to hear this as a GSU student, and as a POC. This is intolerable speech from a student at Georgia State University, and I'm ashamed... This has no place in my school and is incredibly disrespectful to the black student body here. Georgia State is known for being a diverse and inclusive school for all backgrounds, so I'm incredibly disappointed that GSU has not taken effective action to reprimand this student. Such an offensive slur has no place on my campus, nor should any student have to witness an athlete representing their school comment such a derogatory term. I am utterly disappointed. Ms. Martinez should be well aware of what her actions have done, and I hope GSU takes action to give her the consequences necessary.
