Expat Canadians deserve the right to vote in Federal Elections

Election apathy within Canada is rife and weakening the country. Don't let this policy weaken it further by alienating the citizens who live abroad! We care about Canada, no matter where we live.

Should be a right for all citizens. My ancestors came from France in the early-1600s and now I can't vote as an expat...

This law iso just not roght. If convicts can vote, so too can nonresidents. I watch CBC news every day and so have as good a grasp of issues and news in Canada as a citizen living there.

So unfair. If Americans can live in the US, move abroad and still vote in Federal Elections, so can Canadians living abroad.

There is absolutely no reason for depriving citizens of their right to vote unless they have broken all ties with Canada. We live abroad but go back every year to visit our children and grand children . Does it mean that we cannot participate in the choices that will affect their future? After so many years as working parents and tax payers?

Americans who live abroad can vote, why can't I? I love my country. I may currently reside in another but I am still Canadian.

This is absurd. Expats are among the most well-educated and informed citizens, and they are invested in the future of Canada. In a global world, every decision has far-reaching implications, and citizenship should allow voting no matter where one lives!

It is unconstitutional that Canadians living in other countries can't vote. Many of us either plan to return, have investments/property, and/or family in Canada and yet we have no way to have our voices heard. Almost all countries in the world let their expats vote. I always tell people how amazing Canada is, but I feel snubbed by this government and it's elections policies.

complained via Canadian.gov website and received a callback. Been in the UK for 18 years working and plan on retiring back in Canada. Am First Nations and belong to a reservation in Manitoba and all my family reside back home. Was informed I can bring my i.d. to vote in home province.

I am 67 years old. I was born in Canada and lived there until this year. I now live in the U.S. but I daily check the net for Canadian news. The Supreme Court is needed to bring back sanity from this bad interpretation.

Canadians working or studying ,living abroad should have the right to vote without limit of time. Since our country has limited internal market and a lot of Canadians have to go to work abroad , study and acquire additional knowledge and experience.Their contributions bring benefits to Canada. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms is absolutely clear and unequivocal about both democratic rights and mobility rights. Every Canadian citizen has the right to vote, and every Canadian citizen has the right to enter, remain in, and leave Canada. There is no reasonable justification for refusing to allow Canadians to exercise these rights in conjunction.

What's most interesting is the timing and the cost, taxpayer dollars, that is being expended to suppress the voices of a very small minority of Canadians living outside of Canada. Voices that now can only be heard in courts. Such a change is insignificant in the outcome of an election and is purely of ideological benefit to a select few. There is real cost to making such a change as it was absolutely certain to be challenged in courts. How much did it cost the taxpayer, per vote, so far to suppress these expat votes? Who benefits truly, and why is it important to do this now?

Taking the voting rights away from a citizen is wrong. Period. If convicted criminals in jail can vote, so should law-abiding citizens currently staying abroad.

For reasons that prevent me from returning to Canada at this present stage in my life does not mean I do not want to return. It's because I can't. Until they can fix the property crunch in Vancouver, it is difficult for me to come home. Financial it's not possible. That being said, I don't believe I am any less Canadian than the person living it in. I love my country, its the only country I know. Where as others non-citizens, what give them the rights to vote just because they live there. Some don't even contribute positively to the country. I still pay my taxes. I follow the current affairs. Will they serve Canada in times of needs. If they aren't a citizen they won't there isn't a need also Canada allows for dual citizenship, they can always run home to their mothers. For me, there is no where else to run to. I only have Canada. I should be able to vote what goes on in my country should and when I return I will know its still glorious, strong and free.

I was born in Canada and both my parents served in the armed forces during the 2nd world war. My wife came to Canada at 5 years of age and became a proud Canadian citizen. We have both worked and paid our taxes since we were in our early teens. We have raise four children who work, pay taxes, and contribute to their communities as did we. Why should we lose our Canadian right to vote because we choose to spend our declining years abroad. We will still be paying taxes on our Canadian pensions and investments !
