PETITION TO EXPAND USD LAW SCHOOL STUDENT DISTINCTIONS

Honorable School Board of the University of San Diego ("USD"), School of Law,

We, the students, alumni, and faculty of USD, request the Honorable Board to vote in favor of adopting the following amendments to Rule II of the Academic Rules:

1. An expansion of the Cum Laude honor roll under Rule II.A. of the Academic Rules to a percentage anywhere between the top 25% to top 40% of the graduating senior class and an expansion of the Magna Cum Laude honor roll under Rule II.A. of the Academic Rules to a percentage anywhere between the top 7% to top 15% of the graduating senior class and an expansion ofthe Summa Cum Laude honor roll under Rule II.A. of the Academic Rules to a percentage anywhere between the top 2% to 5% of the graduating senior class.

2. Adopt additional honorary titles based on specific criterias for those who fall below Cum Laude to apply for the consideration of a board to receive an honorary title.

3. Permit retroactive application of the Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Summa Cum Laudeexpansion in accordance with Rule II.B. of the Academic Rules to benefit Alumni so they may consider reciprocity of appreication through charity or networking to USD's school of law.

We, the students, alumni, and faculty of USD, request the Honorable Board to vote in favor of adopting the amendments to Rule II of the Academic Rules based on the following merits:

* Whereas the job market for law students is becoming increaslingly difficult to USD law students to attain jobs against other tier one and two law students.

* Whereas USD's current Cum Laude at the top 15% is among the few law schools with the lowest Cum Laude percent and is the second lowest Cum Laude percent among the top 100 law schools.

* Whereas other tier one and two law schools offer latin honorary distinctions at an industry average of between 25% to 30% for Cum Laude and 7.5% to 10% for Magna Cum Laude making their law students more competitive than USD law students.

* Whereas some other tier one and two law schools offer honrary distinctions outside of latin honorary awards that are based on specific criteria outside of GPA to distinguish their students and make them more competitive to USD law students who have not attained any honorary distinctions.

* Whereas providing USD law students and alumni an additional recognition will in turn increase competitiveness and success of USD law students and in turn increase reciprocal appreciation for USD through funding, charity, networking, and preference to USD over other law schools.

Therefore, so be it resolved, we the undersigned students, alumni, and faculty of USD, do hereby sign our support for the adoption and amendment of USD's Academic Rules to incorporate under Rule II:

1. An expansion of the Cum Laude honor roll under Rule II.A. of the Academic Rules to a percentage anywhere between the top 25% to top 40% of the graduating senior class and an expansion of the Magna Cum Laude honor roll under Rule II.A. of the Academic Rules to a percentage anywhere between the top 7% to top 15% of the graduating senior class and an expansion of the Summa Cum Laude honor roll under Rule II.A. of the Academic Rules to a percentage anywhere between the top 2% to top 5% of the graduating senior class.

2. Adopt honorary titles based on specific criterias for those who fall below Cum Laude to apply for the consideration of a board to receive an honorary title.

3. Permit retroactive application of the Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Summa Cum Laude expansion in accordance with Rule II.B. of the Academic Rules to benefit Alumni so they may consider reciprocity of appreication through charity or networking to USD's school of law.

By signing this petition, we request the Honorable School Board of USD, School of Law, to adopt the amendments requested to USD's Academic Rules to incorporate the above amendments.

Finally. The current cutoffs are way too strict and don't reflect the actual hard work we put in over three years.

my gpa is literally decimals away from the current cutoff. this would be such a huge help for my resume when applying to firms in this tough market.
