Wandsworth Council have recently denied planning (pending appeal) for evening and weekend social football at St Mary's primary school in Battersea. This is mainly due to a handful of local residents who feel that recreational sport will have a negative impact to their lives.

Official comment by Wandsworth Council. “By virtue of its location and close proximity to neighbouring properties the proposed development would have an unacceptable impact upon the amenity of neighbouring residents through light pollution, noise, activity and disturbance"

Prior to appealing Wandworth council’s decision, we are taking the necessary steps to appease local residents. Available out of school hours usage time will be adjusted from 39hr a week to just 12 hours a week. And light pollution/disturbance will be significantly reduced by the erection screens around the playing area.

The impact of closure will leave 3 members of staff unemployed, over 200 people without 40mins - 1hr exercise per week and a reduction of much needed secondary income to St Mary's Primary School.

The is a key part of the local community and a good use of local resources. We rely on it for our weekly game and it does not disturb any local residents

The regular usage of the football pitch has given me not only an opportunity to have regular exercise once a week, but also something to look forward to on an always dull Monday and a chance to meet new people hence our team name, ’Strangers United’. Therefore, it would be a great shame to see the recreational usage of the pitch be discontinued.

Please make a proportionate decision that balances the needs of the many people who need to play sport across the city and those who live nearby.

This is the only time and place I can get exercise and social interaction during the week due to my busy schedule, by taking this away myself, teammates and fellow recreational users will suffer

The loss of St Mary’s pitch would have a huge impact to the local community. Over the past months, the venue has become local hub for affordable football within battersea. It’s a great location/pitch and the easily the best price in london. It’s also available for private hire on a week to week basis rather than being totally booked up like Battersea Park, Battersea Sports Centre and Wandle Centre. Please consider the negative impact to the local community if closure goes ahead!

My friend Jamie uses these facilities every week without fail. It honestly would be a travesty to take this away from him and everyone else that enjoys using this space. It also helps counter obesity.
