Ethel Smiley Way

Mrs. Smiley was remarkable and made a huge impact on the community. I wish she was here to see this but I know she is looking down from heaven and smiling

Ethel Smiley was a mover, a shaker and a healer. There was no project she was timid to get involved with. She worked with persons of all colors and creeds. She fed us, clothed us and took exceptional care of us. In times of strife (which there were many) she brought people together. she healed broken hearts and calmed the angry. When Octavis Long was hung in our jail cell, and the community was outraged, she opened the doors of the Freedom House and let the people come in. She let us get our frustrations out. She cried with us, calmed us and let us display our voices. She rose up with us. She brought in Mr. Frank Tyler from the Department of Justice to assist us. There will NEVER be another Ethel Smiley. God rest her soul.

Phenomenal woman

A true Pioneer for Civil rights and equality. Darby Borough was blessed to have her as a neighbor friend and activist for all, especially the African American Community.

What a beautiful petition long over due as far as I'm concerned instead name the Town after her

Though this beautiful woman in honor isn't here to witness how much of a remarkable impact she has left behind to be acknowledge by so many people she has touched and her legacy to be still spoken is Priceless. How do we not have a street named after Mrs. Ethel Smiley???? She was our local leader, had a passion for anyone in need, literally young and old! From her Freedom House (part of the Underground Railroad) that gave poor kids like me food and a safe place to go each day to her elderly care/assisted living facility next door...Mrs. Smiley and her loving family did so much for our beloved Darby, PA 19023 under the radar, not seeking any recognition period, she lead from her heart! Me and my siblings literally ate dog food until she saved us. Her grandson, Barry Jones, his brother and staff/ family gave us a roof over our heads and food in our bellies when there was no help in the 70's & 80's in Darby. Her story is untold but her legacy lives on through those of us she cared for. Before I joined the United States Marines, I drove my 1969 VW Bug from Orlando to Darby just to see her and I was star struck she remembered me. She built me. Roofed me. Fed me. Taught me. Loved me from the day she met me. She's the reason my money is not mine like her money wasn't hers. It's for others to have what she gave me. A life…I am formally asking, Darby, Pennsylvania to please dedicate one Street to Mrs. Ethel Smiley.
