To Establish A Spanish Immersion Program In Yuba City
This petition has been created by parents and community members who are in support of starting a Spanish Immersion Program at Yuba City Unified School District with the goal of starting a TK/K and 1st Grade class in the 2023-2024 school year.
What is a Spanish Immersion Program? Two-way Bilingual Immersion programs blend two language education models: an immersion program for English-only speakers and a bilingual maintenance model for English learners. Students from the two language groups attend class together, learning from one another and supporting each other's second language acquisition. Both groups of students develop linguistic and academic competence in two languages: their native language and one more. (from the California Association for Bilingual Education ‘CABE’ website)
These programs are designed to teach children both languages from the time they are in kindergarten so that they become increasingly proficient as they progress through elementary school.
Immersion programs aim to provide high quality educational experiences for all students, promoting higher levels of academic achievement and giving them a global competitive edge in the future. Nearly 40 years of research has shown that immersion students score significantly higher on standardized tests than non-immersion students.
The California Department of Education has a Multilingual Support Division which provides an abundance of resources for both parents and local educational agencies. Visit their website to learn more: https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/el/er/ . Another great resource is https://duallanguageschools.org/ .

The organizers of this petition have spoken with the Assistant Superintendent at YCUSD who has asked that we continue to collect the signatures of parents whose children would be enrolled in TK/K or 1st grade in 2023-24. Once we have collected at least 40 signatures, then we will hold a meeting with the parents and school board to discuss ways of moving forward.
We will keep you informed with updates as they come along.
Thank you in advance for your support!
