Firstly this is something I have wanted to fight for, for years but never really knew how to start making things happen. I am a mother of a 3 year old and stepmother to 13 yr old and 15 yr old. I have lived in weymouth all my life but travelled to many places round the world which have all been very very bike friendly. I ride to work from the Nothe to Preston everyday to and from work and come summer weather my family and I ride to the beach, I have a bike seat for my 3 yr old and feel very UNSAFE on the roads so I ride on the pavements and people do get quite cross sometimes but why should I risk our lives? I have family in france where they have cycle paths next to their small promenade for miles and miles all round the coast line in Royan. I lived in Australia for a year and on every beach promenade were cyclists, rollor skaters, skate boarders you name it they were there. My husband and I went to Palma for our 1st year aniversary last year and we wished we had bikes as they were EVERYWHERE. We are, as a human race bigger than ever obeisity is nearly as bad in this country as it is in the US, pollution is not ever gonna stop but we can help it from getting any worse, Can't we? All the time we are being urged to share cars to work or walk, ride? " Be healthier people" THEY say. Yesterday, my sister and I were stopped at 4.30 pm by two police men on bikes on weymouth Esplanade by the sea palace,( usually I see them at about 7am!!!) stopping cyclists which is when I go on the pavement!!! Now these policemen were only doing their job and were very nice and did'nt fine us £300! I asked one whether he enjoyed his bike and surely he would like to see a cycle path from weymouth town to the sealife centre and sure enough he would! "Go to the Echo" he said. The other day I heard that a 4 yr old boy had to get off his little bike and walk it on his bike ride with his mother! How is this right? We have such a beautiful promenade and all want to enjoy its beauty and it is surely big enough for everyone to do what they want on it? Even if it was certain times like before 10 after 5. Apparently the reason we haven't got a cycle path there is down to lack of money so then someone please tell me about the roundabout next to cafe oasis and why it was needed??? What a waist of money that is! And the traffic lights at asda were they worth it really? Don't we all want our children to ride safely to the beach or skate park without risking our liveson the roads on our bikes! I can't see how little old me could change anything but with you all backing me and the esplanade project we could have one amazing front !
