Food deserts are defined as urban areas in which it is extremely difficult to come-by affordable or good-quality fresh food. Research has shown that more than 2.3 million Americans live more than a mile from a supermarket and do not have access to a mode of transportation. They span the vast majority of Middle American, where one can find mainly minimarts and fast food joints. Food deserts are of high socioeconomic concern, as they are commonly found in communities of color and low-income.
