I think it's a Lecturer that started this petition. I boycott this petition! CSUCI is a great institution and I only want to be taught by real professors. I spend lots of money on my education and expect qualified Chican@ professors with doctorates, not Lecturers! Haven't we've oppressed enough, I want to learn and be challenged by the ones who write our books so I can be a professor one day. I expect the best so I can help my Chicano Community. Sorry, but this petition is mediocre. I am part Chumash and I reject this petition.

Hello Mr. Aparicio! Thank you for supporting us by signing our petition. We just want to clarify a few things. First and foremost, this is most definitely a student-led movement, it always has been. We are of course working with and seeking guidance from allies both on and off campus. Secondly, it's important to make very clear that we are NOT speaking FOR the Chumash community, but rather, are speaking WITH them in this collaborative effort. Several elders from the Chumash community (including both the Barbareno and Ventureno Bands) have communicated their dissatisfaction directly with Chicana/o Studies about how they have neglected to follow or honor protocol for the last few years. They have had discussions with them in person and have also written a formal letter to them. So we want to make sure that there isn't any misinformation spreading around about this. To clarify, CHS did not originally ask or have permission, they only recently did so, but by then the damage was done with regards to how they have neglected to work with students and deny the only professor who does officially have permiso to teach certain classes. After years of not honoring these requests, they finally asked for permission, but the Chumash community denied giving them permiso until they fix the in-house problems and adhere to the student demands. They continue to ignore student and Chumash requests and demands, which is why we are now collecting signatures for this petition. Our goal is to work collectively to elevate and support the student and Chumash voices so that our requests are heard and met. Again, we are speaking WITH the Chumash community, not FOR them (nor should anyone else). Thank you again for you support. We hope this explanation helps clear up misinformation.

I wonder if this is students or faculty , either way hopefully the dialogue has started within the Chican@sStudies Dept. , all 3 branches Students , Community, and Teachers. If i could add to the 1st point, how about no Gringos, Criollos, or Foreign Nationals teaching our courses or being the Head of the Department. For the exact reasons stated. Also, on the 3rd point, this should be emphasized that we are Chumash Residents, from the beginning at CSUCI , Mecha and Ch St. has followed protocols to establish the connection with Chumash Nation, they already gave us permission to do our ceremonies , you just got to keep them in mind and invite them if you need them specifically there for something that is appropriate to their inclusion. I fully support this movimiento. Now more than ever are these courses critical for the liberation of marginalized communities. Respecting first nation people is at the core of the xicana\o\c identity, if the institution is failing to do so, they must listen to community voices when these concerns are addressed. Once again, the university leaves it to the students to transform the institution to more equitable space. I fully support the students behind this movement.

The students come first. I feel that studenta are being deprived from knowledge and we care! This is why this petition is here. We want to follow proper indigenous protocols.. that is what Chicano studies is about, preserving that culture. We want our voices to be heard!
