I recently took my skateboard to school because I had to skate to my mom's office after school. I didn't have anywhere convenient to put it and I didn't feel comfortable leaving it in the office all day. I got in trouble for not giving my skateboard to the office. I handled this wrong because I had a bad attitude and let my anger get the best of me. However, I do think there is a better solution that we can come up with.

Skateboardparkguides.org says 3% of the USA skates, this is over 9 million people. Wauconda high school has 1,300 students, 3% of 1,300 is 40 students. Obviously 40 people dont ride or bring a skateboard to school every day. Some skaters do bring their board because there is, conveniently, a skate park right across the street. We also bring boards to use as transportation to and from school.

The office offers to hold your board, however skaters don't feel comfortable handing their board over to someone else. We are often worried about how it will be taken care of or that someone else would claim it as theirs. Your locker is unrealistic because you still have to go through the hall to get to your locker and it might not always fit depending on the size of your board and how many books and other things you have in there. The school doesn’t allow skateboards inside because It's dangerous to carry in halls, because it can be used as a weapon if a fight breaks out. There is also the temptation to ride your board, and there is a lack of storage space while in class.

There is another solution, there are other schools that have skateboard lockers. These lockers allow skaters to lock up their board just like you can lock your bicycle on a rack. We would like to petition school district 118 and wauconda high school to purchase and install these lockers.
