What does it mean to be equitable?

Something that is equitable is fair and reasonable in a way that gives equal treatment to everyone. UNESCO declares that education is a basic human right that works to raise men and women out of poverty, level inequalities and ensure sustainable development. So if it is a basic right why do we have rich and poor school districts? It is the disparity in resources and opportunities that creates an unfair system. For education to truly be meaningful and purpose driven all schools should be provided with adequate and equal resources, opportunities and maintenance.

How can the state provide equitable opportunities for school districts?

The state can create equity across school districts by:

  • emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and cultural competence
  • developing student interest surveys and lead teachers to learn about their students' interests
  • providing every school with a career program to help all students progress or find a career that fits their preference and interest. One way to do this is to fund schools based on equal dollars per student, adjusted or weighted for specific student needs such as poverty, limited English proficiency, foster care or homeless status, or special education status
  • implementing accountability measures to ensure that funding is spent on resources
  • providing targeted support, interventions, and assistance to students who are at risk of falling behind
  • and addressing resource allocation by ensuring equal access to funding, technology, and educational materials.
