Give Eden Prairie Residents a Choice in $20 Million Aquatics Center Spending

Citizens of the Twin Cities have so many choices with fitness facilities already. Funding for such a project will come short as they always do. Just take a look at the Vikings Stadium going up. If the City of Eden Priaire wants such luxurious indoor facilities, increase the dues for using such a facility for those who want it so bad.

No more property tax. If they have the extra money, why not a walking track like the Chaska Community Center at no charge.

Let the people of Eden Prairie decide! If that money is going to be paid for by adding it to our property taxes, we need to have our voices heard!!

The recent editoral "Build pool and they will come", perfectly shows the "keeping up with the Jones" and "build with everyone else's money" mentality of this project. A school referendum was recently voted down, but the school board looks to be gearing up for another school referendum. IF EP taxpayers have an extra 20 million they want to spend, they should be given the choice of where to spend that money, if at all. Also the council should know a lot of EP residents have personal home and family updates they would like to make with THEIR money. This lloks to be a project a project mainly for the swim team/clubs, in which case they should raise private money for the bulk (3/4) of the project.

I'm in favor of the pool project, but it's also a big enough commitment that the people should have a direct voice in the decision

Spending this amount of money without taxpayer votes, is irresponsible. We need a vote

With this poor economy, now is not the time for a grandiose pool facility. Even with a great economy, I am not sure there's a need.

$20 million for a pool upgrade ? We spent millions on the Community Center not that long ago. Why not use the pools at Oak Point ? This would be a poor use of tax payer money.

Apprently this is not going into the high school,why not? If you'r going with a pool for the swim team and for the water ballet team why not. You just did the EPCC pool. Why change it? Roofs always need to be replaced. That is a POOR excuse to put a new. pool in. This sounds more like private pools more then anything else. Sounds like some people have BIG IDEAS and want the tax payer to pay for it and with out a vote.

If you're spending $20 Million of our money - repeat: OUR MONEY - a referendum should be required. I don't deny the pool needs upgrades, but let EP citizens decide if we need to spend $20 Million for an aquatics palace that would rival an olympic center.

I do think a better pool facility is needed, but I object to the way this project has been handled. Special interest groups (Foxjets, local businesses, EP high school aquatics, etc.) have driven this project, and there's been only perfunctory effort to build broad community support or to seek input from EP residents who are not affiliated with these groups.
