I think it's very moving that students initiated this petition. It's a positive way to channel the disappointment and frustration at the news that he will be leaving EO, while also letting the administration know how valuable and irreplaceable he is. I hope that by reading these comments the EO administration will do everything in their power to keep him. Sam inspires students by seeing everyone's potential and by modeling inclusion and appreciation of everyone's strength while also expecting hard work and kindness. Such a rarity to have a person that can balance warmth and high standards seamlessly, EO would be lucky if they could get him to stay and the EO community and parents would benefit from such decision greatly.

I am beyond disappointed that Sam Clark will not be at EO Smith for the upcoming school year. As a parent and local mental health provider, I am incredibly grateful for his involvement in our community. He has been a strong and compassionate role model ~ so necessary right now, more than ever before. Although I am a fierce advocate for DEI practices, I believe that filling positions for the sake of diversity and sacrificing integrity and fidelity is incredibly short sighted and ineffective. Please reconsider your decision or create a position for Sam Clark that allows him to stay at EO and to continue teaching kindness, compassion, hard work, and dedication to our kids.

Sam was always more than just an English teacher to all. He has been at eo smith for years. Playing a crucial role in best buddies, unified basketball, and being the crew coach everyone loves. During my three years I developed an amazing relationship through best buddies and unified basketball. Everyone loves Sam and his room has always been a safe space for all. Whether it’s a problem you’re experiencing, English related, or just wanting to talk about life he has been there to listen. Losing someone who means so much to the students is upsetting. Eo already is short on male English teachers and replacing him with a less qualified female doesn’t seem like the move.
