We, the undersigned, are Lehigh students who believe strongly in having a president who is committed to environmental and social sustainability at an institutional level and understands the importance of creating a university that:
1) Creates opportunities for sustainability concepts to be integrated into our courses
2) Supports extra-curricular and research opportunities focused on sustainability
3) Champions the cause of environmental and social sustainability through policies, funding and operational process changes
We fall behind peer institutions in this area and seek a president that understands institutions of higher education are crucial to creating a more sustainable world for this and future generations. We urge the Presidential Search Committee to find a president that is deeply committed to environmental and social sustainability and seeks to elevate Lehigh as a leader in this area, both in service of preparing us to be a generation of problem-solvers and for the good of the future.

im still pushing to get a meeting with the search committee because they need to hear that we care about the planet more than just on paper. its been cool hearing from so many people who want the curriculum to finally reflect the climate crisis.

the momentum behind this is honestly wild and its clear lehigh students are ready for real change. it feels like people are finally listening to what we have to say about our future on campus.

Lehigh is uniquely positioned to take this on by having an engaged student body and excelling in both technical and liberal arts fields. We have an opportunity to set the bar - let's take advantage of our strengths.
As a leading institution, Lehigh is responsible for recognizing the current climate issues the world is facing and for pioneering steps to limit society's negative impact on the environment.
B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University - Class of 2011, currently a Ph.D Candidate in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University. It is crucially important that the next President of Lehigh University takes sustainability seriously and should bring Lehigh to the forefront of incorporating sustainability into all aspects of higher education. From steering the university’s research thrusts into areas relevant to sustainability to operating the campus in a more sustainable manner, the President must push Lehigh to be better.
This is especially important given recent climate forecasts in the US. If Lehigh can pioneer in sustainability as well as we do in academics, it would serve as a great example for other institutions and our own federal government when it comes to environmental policy.
Lehigh University can no longer hide behind the smoke and mirrors of "sustainability". its time to hire someone who is disciplined in the sciences, articulate in policy and progressive for the needs of a dynamic university.
