PETITION FOR AN MCC EVALUATION OF ENG102EC CLASS
Addressed to - Bonnie Finkelstein (Head of the English Department at MCC)
We would like to bring your attention to the following problem(s)-
- Professor Gorsky has neglected the students of ENG102EC by not grading a majority of our assignments in a timely fashion.
- Professor Gorsky has only graded 3 out of the 8 assignments that he has assigned since the beginning of the semester are graded as of 12/1/2015 (2:34 PM)
- i.e. Self-Authorship paper - Due 9/11/15 - Graded - Week of 11/22/2015
- Additional grades have been added to our cumulative grade, but this grade was automated; via TurnItIn.com when a peer review for papers is completed.
- Professor Gorsky has only graded 3 out of the 8 assignments that he has assigned since the beginning of the semester are graded as of 12/1/2015 (2:34 PM)
- Professor Gorsky "apologized" (while reviewing the guidelines to our final paper for the course) for not grading our assignments and papers throughout the semester. He added "It's not an excuse but I took on an extra class this semester". He promised to have papers graded over Thanksgiving Break but only graded a total of 2 papers.
- The majority of the papers in which he graded had little to no comments or marks on how the student performed.
We, the petitioners, feel that Professor Gorsky’s neglect when it comes to grading our papers has been a disservice his students.
We do fear that Professor Gorksy has too much to grade by the end of the semester and our grades will not be judged fairly.
We also fear that Professor Gorksy will be critical of mistakes which could have been prevented if assignments and papers were graded in a timely fashion.
We request that the English Department at Montgomery Community College “step in” to alleviate our concerns and ensure academic fairness when assessing the grades for the students in ENG102EC.

Yes I agree
My peers and I had to turn in the majority of our assignments for the semester without receiving feedback on any of them. Because of this, our marks don’t reflect our ability and effort, but rather our lack of understanding what was expected of us. In class, when we would ask Professor Gorsky questions about how he was grading us, he liked accuse us of not wanting to work hard (reminding us often that community college is “real college”). As the students paying for this class and doing the work for this class, we know it’s a “real” class. We were not complaining about the work we had to do, we were trying to understand what we needed to focus and improve on, but we never received answers. What we did receive was a very weak defense of an unclear and harsh grading system. Also, since this is a community college, most of us (if not all of us) have plans to eventually transfer so we take our final grades for our courses very seriously. It has been frustrating to feel like we’re going into our assignments blindly and I believe that our grades are suffering unjustly.

I strongly agree with this. After submitting my first paper, and getting a grade and also feedback on my performance for that paper, a lot of mistakes could of been prevented. Also, I would feel more confident of the papers that I was submitting. Even the critical questions that was given out that we needed to provide answers for. When asking the professor exactly how do he grade it, he said based if the answers are correct, I am still unsure of how answers can be correct when it is how the audience reacts to the readings, and the movies.
