Enforcing Road Traffic Regulation in Sekyere Afram Plains District

The Road Traffic Act 2004, Act 683 and Road Traffic Regulation 2012 (LI 2180) are explicit on the number of passengers a taxi can carry that is 5 including the driver. In the extreme case with a spacious taxi, a 6th passenger may be permitted under special circumstances.
In Drobonso, capital of Sekyere Afram Plains District, the situation is different. All taxis load at least 7 including the driver to and fro Kumawu. Practically, 4 passengers are packed at the back seat while 2 together with the driver assume the front seat.
Prior to 2014, the excuse these drivers gave was poor road network and non availability of vehicles. However, the practice didn't stop after the road from Drobonso to Kumawu was tarred.
Interestingly, the overloading doesn't cause the fare to go instead. In fact the opposite is the case.
That isn't all, they drive past police barriers without being questioned by the officers. Such an impunity retards development because it puts Drobonso in a position of a village.
As we preach the "Resetting", this is one important practice that needs urgent attention.
We, the undersigned natives and residents of Sekyere Afram Plains District hereby petition the District Chief Executive, The District Security Council (DISEC), The Hon. Member of Parliament and Nananom to collaborate with the various Driver Unions in Drobonso to bring this practice of overloading to and end within the shortest possible time. We equally demand that your ensure the drivers charge only approved fares instead of extorting unsuspecting passengers.
Thank you
