Recognise this news report? "Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) has announced an increase in its electricity and gas prices of 11% and 18%, edging millions of households closer to fuel poverty. It is the third price rise from one of the "Big Six" – SSE, British Gas, EDF, E.ON, npower and Scottish Power – in less than two months, and will take the typical dual fuel bill from £1,094 to £1,265 per year." Its one of many such reports that frequent the news these days. It seems as if every month or two prices keep going up and up, pushing millions of people into fuel poverty. For some people it is often a choice between putting food on the table, or keeping warm. For the elderly, the vulnerable, and those in financial difficulty, the constant increases are causing misery... and coupled with the often aggressive and arrogant demands made by the energy companies, often resulting in court action and further costs, many people live in fear of doing anything about it. We are told that the costs are to meet the costs of rising oil prices... but consider this - 'Centrica (who own British Gas) have just released record profits of £1.3 billion this year, whilst at the same time increasing their shareholder dividends by 12%. How can this be justified on top of an 18% increase to their customers. Put another way, this is over £100 a year extra out of your pocket each year. Their bills have increase by 100% (doubled) in just 6 years. It isnt even just them... all the big energy companies are announcing record profits, at a time when most people are struggling to make ends meat! Its time the government took action against the energy companies and capped their profits. Its time we say no to the 'Big 6' and other companies inflicting misery on millions, and simply getting away with it. Ask yourself one question... when you look at your energy bill each month and wonder how on Earth your going to pay it, then worry about debt collection activities... is it really right that when we are all being asked to tighten our belts so much, the energy companies are increasing their prices and making record profits, then passing your money back to their already rich shareholders in dividends?
