We, the undersigned residents of the United States, want to draw attention to the following:
- 1 in 3 people blame women in addition to men for being raped when they had been drinking, wearing revealing clothing, or behaving flirtatiously (1).
- 1 in 12 men engage in behavior that is legally defined as rape; 84% are not even aware of this (2).
- 1 in 4 women are raped (3).
- 73% of these women are raped by someone they know.
- Only 7% of these cases are reported.
Therefore, these petitioners would like to illustrate the following:
- Increase awareness about the legal definitions of consent.
- Take a proactive approach in increasing awareness in other men and women.
- Support an end to sexual assault everywhere.
