I have competed in Agility and Retriever for years. Obese dogs struggle in these events and run a high risk of injury. So long as performance competitors have to put “show fat” on a healthy Labradors to enter the show ring, I will not subject my beloved dogs to that risk.

I regularly see dogs over 100 pounds And bitches pushing every bit of 90 pounds in the ring out of breath just going around twice. It really is shameful!!

These dogs should be shown in a healthy weight. They are working dogs and should be physically fit in the show ring. Obesity is unhealthy in any animal. I don’t understand why AKC wants to promote this.

Please, for the sake of the Labrador breed, bring show dogs back to their athletic breed standard, and require hunt test/field trial dogs to also conform to breed standard for conformation and disposition.

I have had seven Labs in my lifetime. I have competed in agility with five. None have been overweight. They have all lived healthy lives all living between 13 to 14 years old. I am hoping that Labs will return to being the healthy, athletic dogs I have always loved.

Current choice: Compete in conformation vs. have a healthy slender dog that lives, on average, 1.8 years longer with better quality of life.
Read the standard! Working dog must be fit!
