Labs have never won the sporting group at Westminster. Only 4 group 2, 1 group 3, and 6 group 4 since 1923. Recently when going up against other breeds, we know why.

I see thjis all the time,the dogs in the ring could not possibly run the fields all day as intended for the Breed,,,they are Hunting dogs!

I have felt the changes breed standards for show dogs has contributed to the ruination of breeds across the board. If you look at what the breeds were originally, there is little resemblance to what we see now.

As a veterinarian who also owns performance Labradors who compete in agility, the obesity In conformation Labrador Retrievers is a disservice to this wonderful and versatile breed.

In 2014 the LRC sent a letter to conformation judges about cracking down on weight and condition in the breed. While that letter created much argument, we started seeing better conditioned Labradors in the show rings (at least in our area). But as time goes on, "bigger is better" seems to be coming back. While I would not agree that most show Labradors are "obese," some are, and most are not in true working condition. Judges AND EXHIBITORS need to be reminded that Labradors are supposed to be shown "in working condition without excess fat"

I was told when I got my Lab that I would have to put 20 pounds on him as a juvenile to “show” him. (He was bred for conformation.) I declined. Kept him lean. He has a championship In agility, the sport he loves. That could never have happened if he were fattened up. He’s 12 now, healthy and still running In agility.

Agree I have field Labs& are fit & perfect weight. All of my Girl preform in Agility, Obedience, Rally,Scentwork, Swim,FastCat, etc.I too do not understand why these over weight/obese dog are grated to winning their class.If the dog is that over weight, how does it run for the bird,swim to get the bird, run uphill or any activity being obese.Don't ruin the breed

Should seen the heat I took on facebook 2 years ago for saying the Lab that won breed at Westminster was fat. He WAS fat. In the UK it is in the standard labs are to be shown in WORKING CONDITION! Most of the US conformation Labs would sink a duck boat.

It is so sad to see "confirmation" labs. There is No Way they could actually do the job they were bred for. It makes me sad every time I watch a show and see all of the Labradors in such poor body condition.
