Ending the 24 Hour Shift
While discussing the policies and expectations that are placed upon Resident Assistants with other student members of Residential Life, we have agreed that the new policy of the 24 hour weekend shift is not conducive to the critical values of education as mentioned above. In fact, 12 added hours of work will impede our ability to actively participate in campus events as well as remove much-needed weekend hours for studying, group meetings, off-campus obligations, and time at the library. Moreover, we have also found this new expectation as an unfair rule that allows Residential Life to create more work for already-busy Resident Assistants while, at the same time, it lacks any form of added compensation (i.e., room wavier, discounted meal plan) for the increase in work time. In other words, our hours of labor have doubled, but the fiscal benefits of the position have remained the same. As we perform more tasks for the same "wage," our role as astute campus leaders is being unjustly exploited.
