Every year, nearly 2 million kangaroos are brutally killed in Australia’s commercial slaughter industry, largely to supply kangaroo leather for athletic shoes. This is one of the largest and most inhumane wildlife massacres in the world—and the U.S. should not be complicit in financing this cruelty.

Why This Must Stop:

Horrific Killing Methods – Up to 40% of adult kangaroos are mis-shot, leaving them wounded and suffering before death. Joeys are killed with blunt force trauma, an accepted industry practice.
Kangaroos Are Vital to Their Ecosystem – These native animals are uniquely adapted to Australia’s landscape, consuming far less water and resources than livestock. Claims of “overpopulation” are exaggerated and misleading.
Alternatives Exist – Major brands like Nike, Puma, Diadora, and New Balance have already
committed to ending kangaroo leather, proving that cruelty-free options are viable.

Why the U.S. Must Take Action:

The U.S. has a proud history of banning the sale of products linked to animal cruelty, including seal pelts, harpooned whale meat, and dolphin-hunted products. It’s time to extend that same protection to kangaroos by passing the Kangaroo Protection Act, which would:

Prohibit the trade of kangaroo parts in the U.S., closing a major market for these cruel products.
Remove financial incentives that drive the large-scale killing of kangaroos.
Encourage more companies to adopt cruelty-free materials, accelerating the transition to synthetic alternatives.
