Petition to Abigail Spanberger and the Virginia General Assembly,Enact Stricter Firearm Purchase Requirements

To the Honorable Members of the Virginia General Assembly, and Governor Abigail Spanberger

We, the undersigned residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia, respectfully petition our legislators to enact new laws to improve public safety and responsible gun ownership. We urge the General Assembly to adopt the following measures for the purchase of any firearm in Virginia:

1. Minimum Age Requirement: Raise the minimum legal age to purchase any firearm to 25 years old, regardless of firearm type.

2. Comprehensive Background Checks:Require mandatory background checks for all prospective firearm consumers. These checks must include a thorough review of both criminal history and relevant medical records to ensure the applicant is fit to own a firearm.

3. Multiple Forms of Identification: Mandate that purchasers present multiple forms of government-issued identification, such as a valid driver’s license, passport, and state-issued identification card, to verify identity and residency. only two types of identification would be required.

These measures are essential steps to reduce gun violence, prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands, and ensure the safety of all Virginians. We believe that responsible gun laws protect both the rights and the well-being of our communities.
