A PROCLAMASIAN: That on the twentieth day of April, in the year two-thousand and seven, all Harajuku Girls held as slaves of Pop Stars within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against Goodness and Taste, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and all potential fans will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom. That We will, on the twentieth day of April aforesaid, by proclamation, declare that lead slave owner Gwen Stefani is a DISGRASIAN, and warrant any further efforts of enslavement to be considered in rebellion against the World at Large; and any other persons contributing to their enslavement also in rebellion to the World at Large." Now, therefore we, the Editors of DISGRASIAN, by virtue of the power of us vested as Commander-in-Chiefs of the Movement for Harajuku Empancipasian, do, on this twentieth day of April, in the year two-thousand and eight, and in accordance with our purpose so to do publicly proclaimed for the full period of a million-gazillion days, from the day first above mentioned, order and designate Gwen Stefani as a DISGRASIAN. And by virtue of the power, and for the purpose aforesaid, We do order and declare that all Harajuku Girls held as yellow slaves by said Gwen Stefani, henceforward shall be free. And We hereby enjoin upon the people so declared to be free. And upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution, upon military necessity, We invoke the considerate judgment of mankind, and the gracious favor of Almighty Bruce Lee. In witness whereof, We have hereunto set our hand and caused the seal of the World at Large to be affixed. Done in the City of Los Angeles, this twentieth day of April, in the year two-thousand and eight, for the greater good of all human beings in the Universe. www.disgrasian.com

Updates

April 21, 2007

The conversation around this petition has evolved into a necessary critique of how pop culture consumes identity for aesthetic gain. I have been spending my time researching similar instances of cultural appropriation to prepare a more formal argument for the next phase of this movement.

The momentum behind this call for emancipation highlights a growing collective desire to challenge the cultural narratives that have long been accepted without question. Seeing the conversation expand beyond our original circle confirms that there is a quiet but firm resolve to hold public figures accountable for the way they represent others.

This whole thing is so uncomfortable. It was weird back then and it's even weirder now looking back. Glad someone is saying it.
