Elon can and needs to do better for its students and staff. The campus can be a tool to fight systemic injustices, but it needs to be actively doing so in reforms to its structure, policy, and response to white supremacy that has upheld it. Black Lives Matter, it’s more than a phrase, it’s a way of teaching and being that Elon needs to learn and implement.

It’s time to make a change. Black students matter. An institution’s duty is to provide safety and security to its students. Black students need to be heard.

The school should absolutely take a stance to protect its vulnerable groups. After the situation with the white picket truck, the school should know that just because we’re tucked away in our Elon bubble doesn’t mean we don’t experience anti-blackness. These things happen in school and on the street but if WE are going to continue to pay ~$50,000 a year WE should feel that the school is going to listen to and support us. Now more than ever is the chance to take a stance, it will look bad if you don’t.

Elon has a lot of work to do. Please take advantage of an opportunity to be on the right side of history and prioritize the wellbeing of black students and communities on campus

We need these changes to continue the process of growth at Elon! This list of demands is part of a rich history of student activism for providing coursework and resources at the university.

For my two years, I have attended Elon and while I truly value my education and connections I have made, these positives are often overshadowed by the institutional hypocrisy of Elon University. It deeply concerns and troubles me to see an institution I love continue to gaslight and placate their minority students. For an administration that claims to value diversity, inclusion, and equity, the fact that these demands have not been previously made a priority is deplorable.

I would be so proud to see these changes put in place. Anyone who is not in support of such action being taken would not cultivate a safe learning environment for ALL students. Emily Ezra Freeman, Class of 2018
