Shri Jairam Ramesh Minister for Environment and Forests Govt. of India New Delhi SUB: Demand for CBI Enquiry to recent arrest of Elephant Traders in Assam We would like to inform you that recently Assam Police has arrested four traders involved in illegal trafficking of elephants from North East India to other parts of India and neighbouring countries. The Police have so far recovered many papers related to illegal trafficking of elephants and could also recover two elephants from the traders hideout. These four arrested traders have revealed that they have so far involved in trafficking of 92 elephants from Assam to other parts of India and neighbouring countries which is illegal as per existing law. Involvement of higher forest officials in this illegal racket has also been come to light. As such these involvement of influential nexus of smugglers, traders and few corrupt forest officials needs to be investigated by a professional investigation agency like the CBI to restore the faith of the common people. As such we would like to request your good office to kindly ask Central Bureau of Investigation to take up the case immediately to unearth the long standing nexus between illegal wildlife traders, smugglers and few corrupt officials. We hope for your urgent action in this matter Thanking you
