Elephants For Life
About 600,000 elephants were killed by poachers by 1989. The number of elephants has dropped 62% in the last decade. Even though selling and trading ivory is illegal, poachers who are part of criminal organizations kill dozens of elephants every day. Kenya's population of African elephants has decreased by 85%, and about half of Africa's total elephant population has been lost. Ivory sales have also tripled in the last decade, making these poor animals even more of a target.
