We, the residents of Airdrie, Alberta, believe that public street parking in residential neighbourhoods should be used respectfully and fairly by all. Unfortunately, an increasing number of homes, particularly those used to operate businesses, are occupying multiple public parking spaces for extended periods, leaving little to no room for actual residents, their families, or their guests.

Many of us live on corner lots or in areas where driveway space is limited. When one household uses five or more public parking spaces, especially while leaving their own driveways empty, it causes daily stress, creates friction between neighbours, and undermines the sense of community we cherish.

This is not just about convenience, it's about common courtesy. It is about ensuring residents and visitors have fair access to the streets in front of their own homes, especially when those homes have multiple working adults, children, and elderly family members who rely on nearby parking.

We are calling on the City of Airdrie to:

  1. Review and enforce existing parking bylaws—including those regarding prolonged parking in one spot, and the use of residential streets for commercial vehicle storage.
  2. Introduce residential parking restrictions or permit systems in problem areas to prevent chronic misuse.
  3. Provide clearer guidelines to home-based businesses on appropriate use of street parking and overflow vehicle storage.
  4. Educate the public on parking etiquette to foster more respectful neighbourhoods.

Airdrie is growing fast—but we must grow with care. Our communities should reflect the values that define us as Canadians: respect, fairness, and cooperation.

Let’s work together to protect our neighbourhoods, our peace of mind, and our shared public space.
