In the United States the government spends approximately $25,000- $50,000 per bed in the penitentiary systems. The United States as a whole holds the highest documented incarceration rate in the world. By pinpointing problems on a state-by-state level, the amount needed to provide a significant change would be better established. In Washington State alone, approximately $8,752 is spent per student annually. People believe that reversing these amounts would reduce prison populations and invigorate the extremely underfunded public schools.
